The identification of bird remains, in particular of pieces of feather, is of great importance to aviation. Bird collisions are hazardous, costing millions of dollars in damage worldwide. Correct identification of the remains improves the accuracy of bird strike statistics and thus contributes to flight safety. In fields like archeology and criminology, in studies of food consumption and in the enforcement of nature protection laws, identification of bird remains is also essential. This CD-ROM holds a multimedia database with detailed information on microscopic feather structures of 200 bird species from Europe and the Middle East. Its image library contains a unique reference collection of well over 1800 images of feathers and habitus pictures. An innovative computer-guided identification system assists the user in recognizing the identification characters and in quickly identifying the taxa. The interactive geographic information system supports the use of location in selecting potential hit-species. BRIS was developed by ETI, the University of Amsterdam, and the Tel Aviv University with support from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, the Israel Air Force and the SPNI. In combination with, and in addition to this CD-ROM, it is also possible to contract the European Centre for the Identification of Bird Remains (ECIBR) or the Laboratory for Feather Remains Identification for extended (confidential) identification services.

Blackflies are a family of homogenous small dipteran flies, usually quite darkly colored, hence the vernacular family name. Females of many species are vicious bloodsuckers that attack birds or mammals, and some species are vectors transmitting pathogen organisms.
Presently 2060 recent blackfly species are recognized worldwide. Many additional species are not known well enough to decide whether or not they are valid species. This uncertainty in some extent applies also to the North European blackfly fauna. Our knowledge is that we have at least 71 valid blackfly species in Northern Europe. Apparently, we still must expect discovery of new synonymy and name changes in Northern European species due to misunderstanding and wrong usage of names.
The presentation on this CD-ROM is a revision of the taxonomic and nomenclature status of the North European blackfly fauna. Most of the study is based on material from Fennoscandia and adjacent areas, including Denmark.
Taxonomic notes and references on distribution are given for each separate species. Common names are introduced to many of the blackfly species. These are not much cited in literature but we include them here as we feel they are useful and interesting. In addition we include vernacular names (relating to Norwegian geographical places) of two species (Metacnephia tredecimata and Simulium truncatum), which are in local use for many years.

Processes related to DNA and proteins are elegant and often complicated. The challenge of telling the story of DNA and proteins is to keep it simple but at the same time scientifically accurate. With this in mind, the information in this CD-ROM is presented in a continuous, basic level story-line, while the advanced level details are optional. The program is intended for use in both secondary schools (age 16 and above) and first or second year university. The advanced level information helps to understand complex processes and stimulates curiosity in secondary school students. For undergraduates, the basic level helps to eliminate deficiencies in understanding and to strengthen essential knowledge. A simple navigation system allows switching between the levels and topics without the risk of "losing track". Numerous illustrations and animations support the textual information. An index containing over 200 entries provides direct access to the many topics covered in the sections. A diagnostic test with feedback helps students to grasp fundamental concepts. The user-friendly nature of the program makes it ideal for group teaching or self-study. It can be used as a stand-alone resource or to complement text books.

DNA technologies have a steadily increasing impact on many aspects of our live. Applications in the medical field are most prominent: prenatal and neonatal screening, diagnostics of hereditary disorders, patient specific treatment of diseases and hopefully in the near future the possibility to cure diseases caused by non-functional genes or cells. Large scale production of life saving proteins is an equally important benefit of genetic engineering. Crops can be protected against pets by predator specific treatments. And last but not least DNA analyses have proved to be a valuable tool in forensic investigations. This module explains the essentials of DNA techniques and their applications. Knowledge is a must for understanding the power of molecular biology, and helps forming a well-funded opinion on developments that are changing our society. The techniques and examples addressed in the module are supported by report and assignment forms. It is highly recommended that students use them while working on the -virtual- experiments. Reports help them to structure essential steps and note results of the experiments. Assignments are meant to reflect on the significance of the experiments and their applications.

This CD-ROM covers the early developmental stages of fish from three geographic areas: southern India, Thailand and the Philippines. Altogether, 77 selected fish species of great economic value have been determined. Only the early stages occurring frequently in mangrove waters are chosen for description. Where many stages of a species are found in mangroves, a figure to represent a typical stage is given while the description covers the characteristic features of many stages. This should suffice for the identification of early developmental stages of mangrove fish. To enable intercomparison, all species are treated in the same way: after a brief illustrated description of the early stages of individual species, the salient biological, ecological, capture fisheries and aquaculture-related information of the species as a whole and not of the early stages alone, are given, to indicate the strategic, academic and applied importance of individual elements.

It contains descriptions of the genera and selected species, keys for identification, and a hyperlinked glossary. For each genus and species the full synonymy is given. The nicest feature of this CD-ROM is the large number of illustrations, ranging from manuscript drawings and old plates to digitised color slides, many depicting rare species, most never published before. This CD-ROM was compiled at the Leiden Branch of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands, formerly known as the Rijksherbarium. Other leading botanical institutes, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, as well as several excellent photographers have contributed to this CD-ROM, which should be in the collection of every professional and amateur who is interested in the orchids of Southeast Asia and the Pacific in general, and those of New Guinea in particular.
«While future volumes will concentrate on species, this one includes descriptions, a checklist, identifcation and bibliographical references for the 132 genera of Papua New Guinea. Combined with 2000 images it is an essential reference tool or any enthusiast or academic of the orchids of PNG.» -- Stephen Kemp in The Australian Orchid Review

This CD-ROM, the final volume in the series, treats the mega-genus Bulbophyllum. Two genera that clearly belong to Bulbophyllum, namely Pedilochilus and Saccoglossum, are provisionally maintained here pending the formal transfer of the species concerned. Some 635 species are treated in detail. For each species a full description is given, with data on distribution (including maps), synonymy, cultivation, ecology, typification, classification, etc. In excess of 2500 color photographs and drawings add to the value of this CD-ROM. A special feature, as compared to prior volumes, is the about 1000 stereo and stereo-macro images made by Peter Jongejan. These offer amazing 3D views of some of the most intricate flowers in the Plant Kingdom. A combination of videos of living plants and three dimensional animations. Combining images of living plant stages with computer simulations allows you to easily bridge the gap between the familiar plant and the micro-environment contained within it. Place yourself inside the stamen and carpel! Three dimensional animations take you in inside both structures to see sporangia and gametophytes. Dynamic events such as pollination, gametophyte formation, fertilisation, embryo formation and fruit formation are seen as spectacular computer simulations. There are three levels of increasing complexity: 1. Simple - no terminology or breaks, 17m:11s; 2. Intermediate - simple terminology and divided into sections with summaries, 21m:20s; 3. Advanced - contains scientific terminology, divided into sections, 18m:50s.

About ETI's CD-ROMs and other releases
ETI produces, together with its partners, taxonomic 'e-monographs' on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, as well as video DVDs and PhotoCDs to document the world's biodiversity resources and to provide scientists, students, eco-managers and other users with quality up-to-date taxonomic and biodiversity information systems. These efforts are part of our contribution to the Species Bank Programme of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

The World Biodiversity Database CD-ROM Series
These CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs are based on ETI's Linnaeus II content management software (or comparable ETI-supported software) and contain multimedia taxonomic databases, computer-assisted identification keys and interactive geographic information systems. They either encompass a taxon (regionally or worldwide), or contain a biodiversity information system covering species diversity in a specified geographic region. These titles provide detailed and complete information systems that are to be used as state of the art taxonomic references works for bio-monitoring purposes, biodiversity documentation, etc. The information on some of these CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs is derived from ETI's Partner Networks or from collaborative programmes with partner institutions. Linnaeus II-based information systems can also be published online and made accessible through ETI's World Biodiversity Database.
